Our Mentors

Our mentors are faculty/physicians, research staff and ancillary health professionals who volunteer to work with METEOR students to plan, execute and present on focused research in their field. Past collaborations can be seen in the table below.

Our mentorship teams have included staff of the following divisions/research institutes:

  • Anesthesiology

  • Bioengineering

  • Cardiology

  • Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases

  • Center for Translational Research

  • Emergency Medicine

  • Endocrinology

  • Fetal and Transitional Medicine

  • Heart Institute

  • Hematology

  • IMPACT DC Asthma Program

  • Neonatology

  • Neurology

  • Otolaryngology

  • Sheik Zayed Institute of Pediatric Innovation

Meet some of our mentors!

Joshua Corbin, Ph.D.

Research Faculty, Ctr for Neuroscience Research

METEOR projects mentored:

  • Foxp2 Loss in the MeA: Effects on Social Interaction in Adult Mice

  • Early brain development in the TcMAC21 mouse model of Down syndrome

Why would you recommend METEOR?

The METEOR program is a tremendous opportunity for high school students interested in biology and/or medicine to be exposed to top notch research and clinical care in a world class pediatric hospital in the nation’s capital. Students have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing research projects and learn first-hand what scientists and clinicians do on a daily basis.

Jason W. Triplett, Ph.D.

Research Faculty, Ctr for Neuroscience Research

METEOR projects mentored:

  • Morphological Characteristics of Fragile X Syndrome Mouse Model in Superior Collicular Neurons

  • Altered organization of neuronal subtypes in the superior colliculus of Fmr1KO mice across development

Why would you recommend METEOR?

The METEOR program is a great opportunity for students to get first-hand experience with cutting-edge research, gain a deeper understanding of neuroscience, and learn how to be a good scientist. By working side-by-side with expert scientists on a daily basis, students not only gain technical skills, but also are exposed to the different paths that are available in science. I’ve been enriched by the students that have been in the lab, so I think it can be a fantastic experience for mentors, as well.
